Ultravation: Improving indoor air quality for over 20 years
Commercial • Institutional • Medical • Manufacturing • Public
Indoor air quality (IAQ) has always been a factor in working and living environments at some level. Today, indoor air is being improved as never before to remove pathogens, allergens, toxic gases/odors and microscopic particulates.
UV-C light is a well-proven, non-chemical disinfectant that creates no by-products or residuals. Since 1933, it has been used in water and air treatment, food processing and pharmaceutical applications, to name just a few. It can in-activate and/or prevent all types of bio-growth without residuals or by-products. There is no direct environmental impact.
UV disinfection technology is recognized by the CDC and the EPA and is the only disinfection technology endorsed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
Below are measurements showing a practical and cost-effective method of achieving airstream disinfection by applying the UV-C energy of two Ultravation UV-C disinfection systems operating in tandem in a single large air handler.
Provide a healthy workplace environment
The reduction of air contamination, including chemical pollutants, airborne bacteria, viruses and allergens as air circulates through the HVAC system provides a safer, more comfortable working environment that can lead to increased productivity, fewer sick days and even support a more positive company culture.
Reduce HVAC energy use with UV Lights
UV prevents bio-growth on HVAC coils which inhibits coil efficiency. Consistently clean and efficient coils maximize HVAC efficiency reducing energy consumption—far beyond the energy used by the disinfection system.
Reduce HVAC maintenance, wear and tear
Reduced operating hours also result in less maintenance and the extension of the overall life of the HVAC system.

Airstream Disinfection Designed for Commercial HVAC Ductwork
The Ultravation UVMatrix™ AS-Series is capable of exposing airborne microorganisms circulating through an HVAC system to high levels of UV-C energy. A major benefit of HVAC airstream disinfection is the reduction of airborne bacteria and viruses that accumulate in one area, room or office from being spread to others. Another is the ability to apply a very intense germicidal dose with needed exposure or dwell time since the ductwork lends itself to that purpose and people are completely shielded from the germicidal UV light.
- Can be configurated for nearly any airstream disinfection task
- Low power consumption
- 18,000-hour lamp life
- 10-year UV system warranty
- 1-year UV lamp warranty
While the AS Series can be configured for nearly any airstream disinfection task. It is often used in tandem with UVMatrix SI or LCI-series as an efficient, unified system that provides coil and surface irradiation while efficiently combining the airstream disinfection power of each UV system. Combining systems in this way can reduce the system size needed for the AS-Series, while still achieving targeted performance.
UV dosage calculation
UVMatrix™ AS provides extended germicidal UV exposure time specifically for airstream applications
The AS-Series is designed to bring the needed dwell or exposure time that is necessary to achieve the necessary "kill rate" of the target organism. It is important to remember that air is passing through HVAC air ducts at high speeds. The AS-Series is designed to bring the needed UV dose to effectively eliminate microbes, even in the fast moving HVAC airstream.
For efficiency and added benefit an AS-Series system will often be combined with an SI-Series or LCI-Series installation where the two systems work in tandem. An Si-Series system is primarily installed to disinfect the coil and surrounding surfaces. As a side benefit, its 360° dispersion and T3 lamps serve to partially disinfect the passing airstream. When this "pre-disinfection" phased into the overall dosage calculation, the AS-Series component can be reduced in size. The result is a unified system that provides coil and surface irradiation and effective airstream disinfection and minimized cost.
Configurations for nearly any airstream disinfection task
The blue bars represent the airstream disinfection effectiveness of the Si-Series. The green bars represent the achievable and cost effective performance of adding the AS-Series, with the two systems working in tandem.
Intensity and Exposure: Getting the right UV dose
Ultraviolet light disinfection effectiveness is based on UV intensity and duration of exposure. UVMatrix™ AS installs inline along the duct work to obtain necessary contact or dwell time. Pre- and post-testing can be performed to confirm performance. Real-time UV intensity monitoring is available.
AS-Series configurations for a variety of ductwork scenarios
Ultravation engineers can determine the configuration including the number of UV lamps needed to meet target inactivation goals. System installation and commissioning by factory engineers is available. Shown below are lamp array examples based on HVAC configuration and needed UV dose.

Rapid pulse ionization for the reduction of odors, VOCs and fine-particulate
UVMatrix™ CIS: Rapid pulse ionization for the reduction of odors, VOCs and fine-particulate
UVMatrix CIS 36 for large air handlers
Ionization for commercial air handlers
Ultravation® UVMatrix™ CIS rapid pulse ion generator systems for large air handler airstreams improve HVAC supply air at the molecular level. Ions improve indoor air quality by reacting with air contamination for:
- Odor and VOC reduction
- Reduction of airborne bacteria and viruses
- Reduction of biogrowth
- Breakdown of smoke particulate
Enhancement of filtration: When installed adjacent (return side) of filtration, UVMatrix™ CIS air ionization creates electrostatic fields that charge micro-particulates from ultra-fine dust to micro-plastics into comparatively large filterable groups. The result is substantially enhanced filter efficiency for very fine particles suspended in the air—historically a difficult region of air contamination reduction.
CIS ionization: How it works
Particulate charging
Micro and nano-particulates are grouped, enhancing filter efficiency for the smallest air contamination.
Odor reduction
Ions react with odor (VOC) molecules, disrupting molecular bonds, reducing them to the normal components of air.
Airstream disinfection
The electrical (+/-) charges of the released ions penetrate the membranes / surfaces of microorganisms, eliminating them.

Upper Room Germicidal UV-C Air Disinfection
Safe and effective ultraviolet air disinfection for occupied spaces.
Ultravation® BioGardUV™ germicidal ultraviolet air disinfection destroys airborne pathogens by exposing the upper regions of a room to germicidal UV light. Since air naturally circulates in any room due to convection, air that is warmed in the lower part of a room (from respiration and other sources) continually rises where it will be exposed to UV light, which kills airborne bacteria and viruses in seconds. Since the UV light field is restricted to areas above seven feet, the room is safe for occupancy while the air is continuously disinfected.
- Wall mount and bi-directional ceiling mount models
- 22- and 33-inch UV lamp models
- Available with or without a quiet 67cfm fan (30 db)
- Bi-polar ionization option.
- Focused 254nm germicidal UV light
- 9,000 hour UV lamp life
- Energy efficient
- Galvanized steel construction with rugged powder-coat finish
- Safety interlock switch
- Power connection options to accommodate existing wiring and local/national codes
FS-22 and FS-33 models disinfect the air that naturally circulates in the room through convection. Warmed air from activity in the lower parts of the room including respiration rises, carrying pathogens into the disinfection zone above. The disinfected air cools and falls back to the lower regions. Available with 22″ or 33″ UV lamp lengths.
FS-22F and FS-33F models include a quiet (30db) fan that accelerates the airflow and directs it past the UV lamp at 67 cfm, and creates airflow across the upper part of the room where disinfection continues.
Bi-polar ionization can be added (FS-22F and FS-33F) breaks down odors and airborne toxins, augments disinfection and reduces micro particulates. Also available with 22″ or 33″ UV lamp lengths.
Ceiling mount models install flush-to-ceiling or with optional pendents. Ceiling mount models create an extended disinfection zone to the front and to the rear.
Important: The 7-foot minimum installation height requirement (measured from the bottom of the unit) must be observed to assure the safety of the occupants.
